Becoming An Old Man

2010/03/24 1 comment

It’s almost March 25th again.

According to Blink182, “nobody likes you when you’re twenty-three.” So I’m glad that’s over.

Thanks Treehugger.com

But Neil Young asserts, “Old man look at my life; Twenty-four and there’s so much more; Live alone in a paradise; That makes me think of two; Love lost, such a cost; Give me things that don’t get lost; Like a coin that won’t get tossed; Rolling home to you.

Not sure if that’s an optimistic outlook for my twenty-fourth trip around the Sun. So here is what want from you for my birthday: a better theme song for me to hum this year.

The Wikipedia entry for the number 24 might offer some clues. Or, you can ask Gallup, who says that 50% of my friends are married or cohabiting (neither for me). The Navy has some fitness standards for me. Here are some party ideas and gift ideas, none of which sound as good as watching UK demolish Cornell tomorrow night while drinking good beer. We can also celebrate some great March 25th events, such as the Verizon/Skype launch, the end of the slave trade in the British Empire, or Greek Independence Day. I’ll be sure to invite some other 325’ers, like Béla Bartók, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Tom Glavine, and Danica Patrick.

OK, musical friends, what will it be?

Crowdsourcing My Date Finding

2010/03/02 2 comments

This is an experiment.

One of my goals for Lent is to go on at least 1 date. It has been a while, I don’t want to let my social skills completely deteriorate, and I’m in search of a little fun. So I realized that I have an abundance of two things: Facebook/Twitter friends and Gift cards. So to make use of those resources, I have chosen to outsource my next date.

The requirements:

  1. Female, Single, located w/in 30 min of Lexington, KY.
  2. Fun, attractive, speaks English (or willing to let me stumble through Hungarian)
  3. Available for a date sometime during March (more specific dates/times coming soon) or see Tungle.me/nicksuch
  4. No repeat dates (sorry to the very short list of women to whom this applies)
  5. Self-nomination is allowed. Yes, you’ll get dinner, movie, and a giftcard. Think of it as a really late Valentines Day gift.

The reward: I will choose 1 lucky lady for this date. She will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to dinner and a movie. The recommender of said lucky woman will receive a giftcard of $25 value (list below). All who view this post are free to make an unlimited number of suggestions, but the reward will only go to one winner. Quality over quantity.

Choose from these gift cards:

  • Panera
  • iTunes
  • Macy’s
  • Starbucks
  • Best Buy
  • Bob Evans
  • BHG

EDIT 04/06/2010: Apparently, Tim Ferriss beat me to the punch (and was a bit more successful). Check out his date outsourcing story.
